St. Hilary of Poitiers writes, "We are fighting today against a wily persecutor, an insinuating enemy, against Constantius the antichrist, who does not scourge the back, but tickles the belly, who does not condemn to life but enriches to death, who instead of thrusting men into the liberty of prison, honours them in the slavery of the palace . . . who does not cut off the head with the sword, but slays the soul with gold ..."

Auguri di Buona Pasqua 2005

«Non abbiate paura! Voi cercate Gesù Nazareno, il crocifisso. È risorto, non è qui». (Marco 16,6)

In te la mia speranza.
Liberami da tutte le mie colpe, *
non rendermi scherno dello stolto."
SALMO 38, 8-9 (cf. Uff.

Cio' che e' reale e' razionale e cio' e' razionale e' reale

What is real is rational and What is rational is real.

"Was vernünftig ist, das ist wirklich; und was wirklich ist, das is vernünftig."

(Vorrede zu Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts, S. 17>).

(G.W.F. Hegel, Phänomenologie des Geistes, in W. Bonspiepen –R. Heede, ed., Gesammelte Werke, IX, Felix Meiner Verlag, Hamburg 1980, 19)

The Whole is the Truth. But only through evolution the whole can come to a complete essence.

(Schnädelbach)I do not know if we really get into trouble when we think the truth and the untruth at the same time. To know something as wrong, to know the untruth, one has to know the truth. We can only know the untruth in relation to the truth; otherwise we do not know it. Untrue and true are related to each other and so we have to think both. And I think Hegel means this when he tells us that through the wrong, through the untruth we come in a dialectical way through reconciliation, to the whole truth. Socrates once said it is not a shame not to know everything, but it is a shame not to have the desire for knowledge. Philosophy starts with the desire to understand the things around us and when we try to understand the things, and then we are on the path to the truth.

Confronta col "De ente et essentia" di Tommaso

Tuesday, March 15, 2005

Chere S-------,

Chere S------,

Faith, Theology and Ontological Quest

At Oxford, Cardinal Proposes Alliance of Faith and
Reason
Delivers Address on Church's Involvement With Science
LONDON, MARCH 8, 2005 (Zenit.org).- An audience at Oxford University heard a plea from the president of the Pontifical Council for Culture for a new alliance between faith and reason. Cardinal Paul Poupard delivered an address at a conference Monday on "Science, Faith and Culture," jointly organized by the pontifical council and Blackfriars Hall at the university. The cardinal's address on "Hope and Anguish: The Church's Involvement with Science" left a central message: On "examining, from a historical perspective, both rationalism as well as fideism," the need is seen for "a strong alliance between reason and faith," he explained. They are the "two wings with which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth," said the cardinal, when evaluating the meeting on Vatican Radio. In this connection, Cardinal Poupard illustrated four historic steps that have been taken to reach this alliance.
The first was taken by the First Vatican Council, "which, surmounting fideism on
one hand and rationalism on the other -- two antagonistic errors so to speak
--
speaks instead of faith as a reasonable homage to truth," the cardinal
said.
"The second step was, obviously, taken by the Second Vatican Council with 'Gaudium et Spes,' which for the first time dedicated a whole chapter to truth, to culture, stressing particularly the autonomy of scientific research," he continued. The third step mentioned by the cardinal involved the commission established by John Paul II to surmount the "Galileo case." The commission worked for 11 years, under the presidency of Cardinal Poupard, and in 1992 acknowledged "in a very loyal manner the errors that were committed in the past and clarified the epistemological question," he said. The last step, the cardinal added, was taken with the Jubilee of Scientists, in 2000, when the Pope launched a new era of relations between faith and science, together with 2,500 scientists from all over the world. On that occasion, the project "Science, Theology and Ontological Quest" was launched, in which pontifical universities and athenaeums of Rome participate, with the help of the Templeton Foundation. Cardinal Poupard and university professors will discuss the project's new objectives this Friday at the Vatican press office. ZE05030806

(I ヨハネ4:18)

At the heart of every culture lies the attitude man takes to the greatest mystery: the mystery of God. --John Paul II, Centesimus Annus

Amaladoss su Cristo asiatico e dialogo

"(...) Though Jesus is Asian, he comes back to Asia after passing through Euro-America, decked up in non recognazable foreign masques and institutions. The Asians are proud of their millenial cultures and find il difficult to relate to these masques, especially when they are sought [sic!] to be imposed."

"Because of the threat of terrorist groups, inspired by religious idoelogy, though the actual reasons for terrorism are economic, political, and cultural, people everywhere have become sensistive to the realation between religions. But authentic dialogue is possible and meaningful only if it accompanies, or is even preceded by, a sincere effort to encourage peace and harmony through promoting freedom, equality, and justice among peoples of all nations and religions. Dialogue is not an easy and cheap substitute for equality and justice. Interreligious dialogue can only be a deeper dimension of a larger dialogue between peoples at all levels of life"

A proposito del titolo di questo blog

Tsurezuregusa [徒然草] ["Momenti d'ozio"] saggio in prosa di Yoshida Kenkô (1330).

The collection of essays Tsurezuregusa (Essays in Idleness), a classic of early medieval Japanese literature, written by Yoshida Kenkō (吉田兼好 Yoshida Kenkō, c. 1283 – c. 1350-52) a Japanese monk.Although most commonly called "Essays in Idleness", a more precise translation of the title would be "Notes from Leisure Hours" or simply "Leisure Hour Notes". Themes of these essays are for example the beauty of the changing seasons and nature in general, the transience of life, traditions, friendship etc. These essays were written in the zuihitsu style. The name zuihitsu means "follow the brush", and the purpose of this style of writing was to allow the writers brush to skip from one topic to the next, led only by the direction of their thoughts.
